Safari Overview

This 4-day Mount Meru climbing itinerary offers an unforgettable trekking experience through the scenic wilderness of northern Tanzania, inside the beautiful landscapes of Arusha National Park. Rising to 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and a perfect alternative or acclimatization trek for Mount Kilimanjaro.

The route takes you through lush montane forests, open moorlands, and dramatic ridgelines where wildlife such as buffalo, giraffes, and colobus monkeys can often be spotted along the trail. This itinerary is designed for adventure seekers looking for a rewarding climb, excellent acclimatization, and panoramic views over the crater floor and distant Kilimanjaro on clear days.

Itinerary

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Your adventure begins at Momella Gate after registration and briefing by park rangers. The trek starts gently through open grasslands where giraffes, warthogs, and buffalo may be seen grazing freely. As you continue deeper into the forest zone, the trail becomes more shaded and rich with birdlife and towering trees covered in moss. The climb is steady but manageable, making it ideal for warming up your body for the days ahead.

By late afternoon, you arrive at Miriakamba Hut, where you will enjoy dinner, rest, and overnight stay while surrounded by the peaceful mountain forest.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

After breakfast, the trail becomes steeper as you ascend through lush montane forest into the heath and moorland zone. Along the way, you may enjoy stunning viewpoints overlooking the crater and surrounding plains.

This section is more challenging, but the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic with giant lobelias and unique alpine vegetation. You arrive at Saddle Hut in the afternoon, located beneath the summit ridge. In the evening, an optional short acclimatization hike to Little Meru offers breathtaking sunset views and helps prepare your body for summit night.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak (Summit) to Miriakamba Hut

Your summit attempt begins very early around midnight. The climb to Socialist Peak is steep and demanding, taking you along a narrow ridge with incredible views of the crater below.

As the sun rises, you reach the summit of Mount Meru (Socialist Peak), where you are rewarded with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro, the crater rim, and vast savannah landscapes. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, you descend carefully back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for overnight stay.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

On the final day, you descend through the lush forest zone back to Momella Gate. The trail is mostly downhill and allows you to enjoy the natural beauty you may have missed during the ascent. You may encounter wildlife again along the way, making the descent feel like a walking safari. Upon arrival at the gate, you receive your climbing certificate and bid farewell to the mountain, marking the end of your unforgettable Mount Meru adventure.
