Rongai Gate, Simba Camp,Second Cave Camp, Kikelewa Camp, Mawenzi Tarn Camp, Kibo Hut and Marangu gate
The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that approaches the mountain from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It is known for being quieter and less crowded compared to other routes, offering a more remote and peaceful trekking experience.
This route is considered moderately difficult and is a great choice for climbers seeking a gradual ascent with a higher chance of spotting wildlife in the early stages. The landscapes are more dry compared to the southern routes, but still incredibly scenic, especially as you cross into the alpine zones near the summit.
The Rongai Route provides good acclimatization, especially when done over 6 days, and descends via the Marangu Route, giving trekkers a varied experience of the mountain.
Your journey begins with a drive to Rongai Gate on the northern side of the mountain. After registration, the trek starts through farmland and pine forest before gradually entering the montane forest.
The trail is gentle and less crowded, offering a quiet start to your climb. You may spot wildlife such as monkeys and various bird species along the way. The day ends at Simba Camp with wide views of the surrounding plains.
Elevation: 1,950 m (6,398 ft) to 2,650 m (8,694 ft)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast, you continue your steady ascent through open moorland. The landscape becomes less forested, with low vegetation and expansive views.
The trail climbs gradually toward Second Cave, offering clear views of Kibo ahead and the Kenyan plains behind you. The pace is relaxed, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.
Elevation: 2,650 m (8,694 ft) to 3,450 m (11,319 ft)
Distance: 6 km (4 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today’s trek takes you further into the moorland zone, with a steady climb toward Kikelewa Camp. The trail becomes steeper in sections, but the scenery is rewarding, with views of Mawenzi Peak becoming more prominent. The environment is quiet and remote, making this a peaceful and scenic day on the mountain.
Elevation: 3,450 m (11,319 ft) to 3,600 m (11,811 ft)
Distance: 6 km (4 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
This is a shorter but steeper day as you climb toward Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak.
The vegetation becomes sparse as you enter a more rugged alpine environment. Upon arrival, you are rewarded with stunning views of Mawenzi and the surrounding landscape. The afternoon is ideal for rest and acclimatization.
Elevation: 3,600 m (11,811 ft) to 4,330 m (14,206 ft)
Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today you cross the wide saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, entering a dry and barren alpine desert. The terrain is open and exposed, with little vegetation and expansive views. The trek is steady but feels more demanding due to the altitude.
Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you will rest, have an early meal, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Elevation: 4,330 m (14,206 ft) to 4,700 m (15,420 ft)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Your summit attempt begins just after midnight, climbing slowly through loose scree toward Gilman’s Point. From there, you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating at the summit and enjoying the sunrise, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down through Horombo Hut and onward to Marangu Gate. This is a long and demanding day, but the sense of achievement is unmatched.
Elevation: 4,700 m (15,420 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft), then down to 1,860 m (6,102 ft)
Distance: Approx. 6 km (4 miles) ascent / 20 km (12+ miles) descent
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours ascent / 6–8 hours descent
